The shop looked healthy
A webshop selling over a billion forints a year rarely questions itself. Orders come in, money comes in, the numbers look good. That is exactly why a bug could hide for years, quietly taking revenue with it.
What the logs said
We found it when we took over the system and read the logs. Until then, nobody had been reading them.
A pattern stood out. Under certain conditions, the system did not send the customer on to the payment page. The purchase stopped right there, and the customer did not come back.
Why the numbers never showed it
Most purchases went through fine. The bug only hit certain cases, sales kept coming in, and from the outside everything worked.
At this size, a slow leak does not show up in the daily figures. Sales do not drop overnight. They are simply lower than they could be. You only see it if you sit down and go through, line by line, what happens between the cart and the payment.
From a hunch to proof
- Found the spot. We traced the stuck purchases through the logs to the branch in the code where the flow stopped.
- Proved it was real money. The affected customers did not buy later either. Not a theoretical loss: those orders simply never happened.
- Fixed it. A few hours of work, and the fix worked immediately.

What to take from it
- Reading the logs is not a luxury. What shows up there shows up in your revenue sooner or later. Just more expensively.
